Dual controls? The backseat must be tight

Yeah it looks like the guys head is hitting the canopy in the back. maybe remove the controls and just keep the seat for a passenger. too bad theres no room for luggage would be cool to say you have a P 51 as a private commuter plane.

I hear the air race mustangs are actually 2/3 scale or some such thing, vote that's the way to go. wonder if thye are cheaper or more expensive than the real deal

There must be room where they kept all those .50 rounds. Also converted drop fuel tank - coolest roof rack pod EVER.

They cut the wings down, at least. Less drag, quicker transitions, stuff like that.

I was thinking along the lines of a T-38 Talon for my dream aerial plaything/commuter. There are a few in civilian hands, and like the P-51, it is still drop-dead gorgeous after all these years. With that storage pod underneath it might even be considered practical.

Have the license... albeit no tailwheel or complex endorsement, but that's easy enough.
I did enough dreaming about these many years ago. They were going for about half a mil back 20-25 years ago. Now this one is over 2 mil. Nice appreciation. Wonder if I can crowdsource it as an investment opportunity...

I see these only rising in price as long as they're well maintained as the years go on.

There are smaller-scale Mustang kitplanes out there. 5151 is one, offhand. From what I have heard, they're very nice flying.
What would be missing, though, would be the noise. That wonderful noise from the Rolls Royce Merlin. I wonder if anyone has ever made a scaled-down version of that... that sounds 'right'.
One example of a mini Mustang.

Very true.
But I'd gladly sell body parts to keep this in the air...

Yeah. If i ever won the lottery this would be one of the first things on my list of stuff to buy.

I know for a fact you can find them much cheaper than that. Closer to $1mil rather than 2. Are you interested in obtaining your pilots license? I started, but it's very costly, so I haven't really done it for a while.

Check out aircraftrecords.com. They have the Checkflight series. The P-51 version is awesome. Preflight, startup, taxi, takeoff and flight from inside the cockpit. The Rolls Royce Merlin sounds awesome! Listen to it often. This is as close you'll get to the real thing. The P-38 Lightning is also one if my favorites. If you're a plane nut, you have to have these.

I've always wanted to but my mom said she would kill me if I did so now that I'm out of the house and have a decent job I've been looking into it again.

It's quite fun. My first lesson, about 2 years ago (I was 18), was awesome. I was sorta expecting the mentor to be an old white guy that would be like James May with pre-flight and kill the fun. I show up and my teacher is a 22y/o black guy (not judging, just didn't expect that) with aviators. Cool guy. He said he flies on the weekends to get away. After brief pre-flight checks, we hop in and taxi to the runway. He then asks if I wanted to takeoff. For some stupid reason I said no. I thought I would f-up, even though I had played flight simulators many times before. After a while he lets me take over and I go over the Chesapeake Bay and it's bridge. Towards the end I flew over the Naval Academy at around 1500-2000ft. That was really fun.
I sort of ranted, but hopefully it conveys how enjoyable the experience is. If you end up doing it, you will most likely be in a Cessna. But, don't worry it's really easy and unforgiving, while being underpowered.

I had the chance to fly a trainer plane once. It was one of the funnest things I've done but my goals of getting my license have been on hold for a long time.

My kids love this show called Mighty Machines (it's poorly done Canadian public TV crap) and they were just watching an episode at an air show. Lots of really great WW2/Korea-vintage planes. My first thought was how expensive these planes must be, and how much money all these people must have to be private owners.
I mean, who just has a Corsair to play with?

When i lived in Bend OR and worked at the local pool, there was a guy who would fly a Spitfire overhead. It was one of the coolest things to see and hear.

Then you may want the civilian version of a Cavalier Mustang which had two seats and baggage space. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavalier_…
